6 reasons why floating is similar to sex

Bear with us for a moment. It might seem slightly insane, but the more you think about it, the more you realise that floating and sex share a fair few similarities.

Alright, alright. Here’s the evidence:

It’s a total escape.
It’s generally agreed that sex is a great way to totally switch off from the world around us – kinda like the most old-school (and most energetic) form of meditation there is! All those unread emails, the overdue bills, the half-packed dishwasher; it all melts into obscurity once you sink into that warm, caressing… salt water!

It’s true, like sex, floating will help you forget the world around you, and once you’re done you’ll have a beaming, glowing smile on your face! The good news is that, with floating, at least you’re definitely guaranteed a full hour! 😉

Sensory deprivation is surprisingly similar to sensory overload.
When you’re having some physical fun with someone, your senses are generally on overload. There’s lots to feel, lots to see, some interesting (and sometimes insane) sounds, a few weird smells and, to get really intimate, the occasional tingling of taste buds too. That’s all five senses, covered in one heated moment. The whole jigsaw comes together to lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) in your body, which allows you to focus, process and totally relax.

Although it comes from the total opposite place, floating scientifically creates very similar results. Research carried out by neuropsychologist Justin Feinstein at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research in America showed floating significantly reduces activity in the part of the brain known as the amygdala, which in turn also helps reduce the production of cortisol in the body. So if you’re ever going through a barren spell in the bedroom, you know who to call…

Both scientifically improve your mood.
Oh, bless @Farmchik13, who recently tweeted: “Great sex puts me in a great mood. Explains why I’m never in a great mood.”

Listen, Lauren, why not try floating instead? We all know that sex releases endorphins and oxytocin, and all those magic chemicals that make you happy and fall in love. But floating not only scientifically improves your mood, it can actually have a long-term effect on your overall mental and physical health – from pain relief, to reduced anxiety.

You’re naked.
It might seem like an obvious one, but as soon as you have to take off ALL your clothes for any activity – other than showering – your mind can wander to… ahem… more ‘intimate’ places. Lingerie aside, coital coupling is traditionally a pretty clothes-less activity. The only difference is that, with floating, nobody is actually going to see your nether regions (and you don’t get to see anyone else’s).

You’ll need a quick shower afterwards.
‘Nuff said…

Your mind will wander.
Like sex, your mind can often go on a journey as you float – to all sorts of interesting places. Studies have found that you’re more likely to experience hallucinations when other senses are deprived, as your mind becomes heightened. Sound familiar? Don’t worry – we won’t tell your significant other about that extended Great British Bake Off fantasy you accidentally found yourself indulging in mid-coitus…
